Gerola alta

The Consortium for the Safeguard of Heritage Bitto has its headquarters in Gerola Alta, a small village within the natural reserve of the Parco delle Orobie Valtellinesi. In the village you will find the Heritage Bitto Centre: the tasting room, shop and the cheese cellar which is kept fresh thanks to natural ventilation from the Bitto river. In the cheese cellar there are over three thousand cheeses, which will mature for up to ten years. The pastures of our cheesemakers are situated in the Orobic Alps, and comprise land within the provinces of Sondrio, Bergamo and Lecco. The pastures are used between June and September.

HOW TO REACH US

WALKING
Through the Orobic cheeses roads. Orobieways is a figure eight pathway (so you can choose one of the circular pathways, or take the whole road) that will take you through the western Orobic alps where you will visit:

  • Seven valleys: Valle Imagna, Val Taleggio, Valtorta, Valle di Averara, Valle del Bitto di Gerola, Valvarrone, Val Biandino;
  • Eight cheeses: Strachitunt ( Sant'Antonio di Vedeseta fraz. Regetto dairy e Alpe Campelli ai Piani di Artavaggio); Stracchino della Valsassina (Alpe Biandino, Colmine di San Pietro, Alpe Maesimo), Alpine Cheese of Piani di Bobbio, Formai de Mut (Alpe Camisolo,Alpe Inferno, Valtorta dairy), Stracchino all'antica delle valli orobiche (Tesoro della Bruna di Corna Imagna dairy, Osvaldo Locatelli di Corna Imagna, Sant'Antonio di Vedeseta dairy, Pasquina Rota di Brumano. Martino Rota di Brumano), Agrì di Valtorta ( Valtorta dairy), Storico (Alpe Pescegallo Foppe, Alpe Trona Soliva, Alpe Varrone, Alpe Valvedrano), Orobic goat cheeses (Alpe Artino), goat Roviöla (Alpe Inferno).
  • Twenty mountain refuges, an alpine farmhouse, thirteen pastures, seven hotels.

BY CAR
From Milan take SS36 towards Lecco-Sondrio.
At the end of the motorway, at Cosio Valtellino, continue towards Morbegno. Follow the road signs for Valgerola, turn left at
the signpost and take SP7. Along the Valgerola you will pass through the villages of Sacco, Rasura, Pedesina and finally reach Gerola Alta. 300metres from the first houses of the village, you will see the hotel Albergo Valli del Bitto on the right, and the Centro del Bitto Storico Presidio Slow Food on the left.

BY TRAIN/BUS
From Milan on the Milano – Lecco – Morbegno – Sondrio –Tirano line.
From Switzerland on the St.Moritz Tirano-Sondrio-Morbegno line.
Stop at Morbegno station, here you can get bus A15 to Gerola Alta/Pescegallo
